While much of New Jersey has been developed, the Pinelands still remain largely untouched. Also called the Pine Barrens, this 'barren' area remains because of its sandy, un-farmable soil and preservation efforts that continue to protect this 1.1 million acre treasure. The Jersey Devil is a local folklore favorite. Said to be born the thirteenth soon of Mother Leeds, upon birth he was cursed by his mother, and flew out the chimney to wreak havoc on the pine barrens for the next 300-or-so years.
